He coached the legendary Natal team during the late 1980s and early 1990s and became a national figure after Natal won their first Currie Cup in 1990, their centenary year.
During his time in Natal, he was affectionately known as the “Godfather” of Sharks rugby, with the franchise naming their main entrance gate at the Kings Park Stadium after him.
His success with Natal led to him coaching the Springbok side. He served as head coach for the Springboks between 1993 and 1994 where he oversaw 12 Tests with a record of 4 wins, 2 draws, and 6 losses, leaving his position following a 2-0 series loss to the All Blacks.
When his coaching career ended, McIntosh was a Springbok selector for 13 years and he also served as a mentor for numerous South African national coaches in the senior and junior ranks.
He also stayed in touch with the game through his involvement with the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA).
Well, the former Springbok and legendary Sharks coach, Ian McIntosh has died. He passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at the age of 84 at a Umhlanga hospital.
The cause of death has not yet been made public but reports say he died after suffering from cancer.
The SA Rugby Legends association for former Springbok and provincial players announced the news of McIntosh’s death on social media.
SA Rugby Legends tweeted: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ian McIntosh — a great man of rugby who gave back so much and worked tirelessly to promote the game of rugby. RIP master.
“Our love and thoughts are with his wife Rhona and the McIntosh family. We are going to miss you.”
