Joss Ackland died at 95 on Sunday, 19 November 2023 his family said in a statement. The prolific stage and screen actor died “peacefully” and was “surrounded by family”, they said.

It added; “With his distinctive voice and commanding presence, Ackland brought a unique intensity and gravitas to his role. He will be remembered as one of Britain’s most talented and beloved actors”

In a career spanning over six decades, Ackland appeared in dozens of films including; Landfall, Ghost Ship, Seven Days to Noon, Crescendo, The House That Dripped Blood, Villain, The Happiness Cage, Penny Gold, The Black Windmill, The Little Prince, Great Expectations, Royal Flash, and Silver Bears.

His other film credits include; The Greek Tycoon, Saint Jack, Saint Jack, The Apple, Lady Jane, The Sicilian, To Kill a Priest, The Object of Beauty, The Bridge, Shadowchaser, The Bridge, Nowhere to Run, Giorgino, Surviving Picasso, Firelight, My Giant, No Good Deed, Moscow Zero, and How About You, among others.

Ackland was awarded a CBE in 2000 for his services to acting. In a 2001 interview with the BBC, he said he appeared in some “awful films” because he was a workaholic.
