Iconic East African Dishes

When I think about East African countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania, I immediately think of the stunning scenery, thriving animals, and rich culture that surrounds them. However, many people are unaware that East Africa is also home to some of the most delectable dishes.

What are the Popular Iconic East African Dishes?

1. Tibs

Tibs is a traditional Ethiopian meat meal that consists of beef or lamb strips sautéed in butter, garlic, onions, pepper, and rosemary. It is available in a variety of spicy degrees and may contain little or no veggies. It’s usually eaten with injera and is reserved for special occasions and holidays. 2. Shiro

Shiro is a popular fasting food in Ethiopia. It’s a flavorful puree of chickpeas or beans with minced garlic, onions, tomatoes, and peppers. Don’t be fooled by the blob-like appearance; this meal is really wonderful. During fasting days, many villagers will eat shiro instead of going to the neighborhood butcher shop.

3. Beyaynetu

Beyaynetu, Ethiopia’s most famous vegetarian cuisine, translates to “a little bit of everything.” Beyaynetu is a plate of injera topped with various vegan curries and vegetables. This dish is particularly appealing to Ethiopians on Wednesdays and Fridays, when they traditionally avoid eating meat.

4. Kenyan Food

Kenya is home to numerous communities, each with its own particular eating culture. In contrast to Ethiopian cuisine, there is no single dish that represents Kenyan cuisine as a whole. Fish foods are typically found in coastal villages, cereals in rural areas, and international cuisines in cities.

Here are some of the most popular foods in Kenyan communities:

Ugali

Ugali, a cornmeal porridge similar to polenta, is a popular food in Kenya. It goes under several names, including gauli, ngima, and sadza. Some people assume it’s a tasteless filler just by looking at it, but it’s not. It has a popcorn-like flavor that can be enhanced with salt and butter. It goes well with pork stew, sour milk, and vegetables.

Nyama Choma

Nyama choma, a delectable roasted pork meal, is not on any Kenyan food list. Freshly butchered goat and cattle are the best meat options, but chicken and fish are also acceptable. Slow roasting brings out the rich flavors of grass-fed goat and well-selected spices.

Irio

Irio, which originated in Kikuyu, has become a staple in many parts of Kenya. This famous mashed side dish is made with potatoes, peas and corn. Irio is thicker, heavier, and has a fuller flavour profile than traditional mashed potatoes. We suggest eating it with Nyama Choma.

5. Tanzanian Food

Tanzanian food is very different from Ethiopian food since it is heavily influenced by Indian cuisine. This gorgeous country’s cuisine is all about rich flavours and hefty portions. Tanzanians frequently serve fish, coconut milk, and spices as main courses, and many banana kinds as dessert.
