Gordon McQueen career
McQueen started out as a goalie at school before switching to center-back. At the age of 18, St. Mirren signed him.
His development was quickly being watched by scouts from other teams, but it was Leeds United who made the final offer of £30,000 in the 1972 offseason because they saw him as a long-term replacement for the ailing Jack Charlton.
A portion of the 1972–73 season saw Charlton on the field, but as the campaign came to an end, he made the decision to retire. In his debut year at Leeds, McQueen played on six different occasions.
For the most of the 1973–74 season, McQueen was a member of the squad as Madeley filled in at various positions and Charlton retired.
The following season, McQueen and Hunter excelled at the back, particularly during Leeds’ run in the European Cup, which McQueen scored three goals.
He received a suspension for the 1975 European Cup Final after getting a red card against Barcelona in the semi-final. Leeds later lost to Bayern Munich in the championship game 2-0.
McQueen transferred from Leeds to Manchester United in February 1978 for £500,000. In response to being signed, he claimed that “99% of players want to play for Manchester United and the rest are liars.”
Only a few weeks prior, he had stated in Shoot magazine that he intended to play his entire career at Elland Road. In the 86th minute of the 1979 FA Cup Final, he scored the first of United’s two goals.
After a replay against Brighton & Hove Albion in the 1983 FA Cup Final, McQueen finally received an FA Cup winner’s medal.
He was also a member of the team that lost to Liverpool in the 1983 Football League Cup Final.
After losing his starting spot to Paul McGrath in the first team and not being selected for the 1985 FA Cup Final squad that defeated Everton 1-0, he eventually left Old Trafford in the close season of that year.
Prior to managing Airdrieonians for a brief period, McQueen was an international coach before working with his first club, St. Mirren.
Bryan Robson, a friend and former teammate of McQueen’s, was hired as Middlesbrough’s manager, and McQueen joined him as reserve-team coach.
He served in this capacity for five years before moving on to coach the first team for two years. In June 2001, McQueen left the Teesside club after Robson resigned and Steve McClaren was appointed.
McQueen later became a pundit for Sky Sports. He rejoined Boro as David Mills’ assistant scout on April 29, 2008.
