Nicholson was chosen by the Orlando Magic on June 28, 2012, with the 19th overall choice in the NBA draft. He joined the Magic on July 3, 2012, after agreeing to a rookie-scale contract, and participated in the NBA Summer League with them.

He had a double-double in his debut summer league game, defeating the Brooklyn Nets with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
